Flad named interim for Central Area

July/August, 2001

Harry Flad, who served as interim minister in six Massachusetts Conference churches in the 1990s, has been named the Interim Central Area Minister. Flad will begin Sept. 1, when Area Minister Richard Sparrow moves on to a post with the national United Church of Christ.

Flad most recently served as interim at the First Church in Cambridge and the Needham Congregational Church.

Flad officially retired last year, but has been working as a consultant with non-profit organizations in transition in Vermont. He has also been volunteering as a mentor for first-year pastors in the Vermont Conference.

“I’ve been ‘retired’ for a year, but I’ve been very busy,” Flad said. “And I’m happy to be going back to Massachusetts. This is very exciting. The Central Association is a strong one, a very vital one, and I’m happy to be part of the transition there.”

The Flads will be moving to West Newton, where Flad’s wife, Margaret, has been called as the Interim Associate Pastor at Eliot Church. Margaret Flad is currently the pastor of the South Hero (Vermont) Congregational Church.

A search committee for a Central Area Minister will be gathered later this year, and is expected to begin working early in 2002.
