Communication seminars moved to high-tech location

December, 2001

A Conference-wide communications training event planned for March has been moved to Worcester Polytechnic Institute, to take advantage of state-of-the-art facilities and multiple hands-on computer classrooms.

All of the workshops held as part of the March 2nd event, Communicating the Gospel for the 21st Century, will take place either in electronic classrooms where all participants have their own computers, or in conference rooms equipped with audiovisual projection systems.

Members of Massachusetts Conference churches take part in a Suitcase Seminar held in a computer lab. At Communicating the Gospel for the 21st Century on March 2nd, many workshops will be held in computer classrooms, allowing participants to receive hands-on training.

The event, one of the replacements for traditional Suitcase Seminars that have been held in past years, was originally scheduled to take place at Anna Maria College in Paxton. But the Commission on Communication decided to move it to a facility that could offer more computer-equipped classrooms.

“Worcester Polytechnic Institute, with its central location and state-of-the-art facilities, is the perfect spot for this event,” said Tiffany Vail, Conference Associate for Communication & Communication Technology.

Vail stressed that the training event is for everyone, not just those with computer or other technological experience. Hands-on computer courses will be offered both for beginners and those with more experience, while other workshops will involve non-computer-related communication skills.

“We plan to offer a wide variety of workshops in order to provide something for everyone,” she said.

Workshops will fall under such categories as contemporary worship, web site development and effective communication both within the congregation and with the community and media. Some non-computer topics include conflict management and video and music ministries.

Participants in the all-day event will be able to take three workshops, chosen from over 20 offerings.

They will also attend a contemporary worship service with Conference Minister and President Nancy S. Taylor giving the meditation.

Course descriptions and other information on the event will be sent to churches and posted on the Conference Web site in January.
