U.S.
flag has a place in the church
To
the Editor,
I would like to respond to the recent article “Does
the US flag belong in the church?” (Nov. 2001) There has been a
Christian flag and an American flag in the front of my church’s sanctuary
for as long as I can remember. Several years ago a United Nations flag
was added.
I believe the American flag definitely has a place in the church. It
is that flag that protects our right to worship freely in any way we
choose without fear or persecution.
Also, there are times when patriotic hymns are appropriate – Memorial
Day, Independence Day, Veterans Day and during national crises. We must
remember, honor, and give thanks for the many thousands of men and women
who have served and died to protect the freedoms we all enjoy.
When we see the American flag displayed in church, we should remember
that our right to worship is guaranteed by our government.
