Whiten honored for ecumenical work

February 2001

The Massachusetts Council of Churches recently presented former Conference Minister and President Bennie E. Whiten, Jr. with the 2001 Forrest L. Knapp Ecumenical Award.

Whiten was honored because of his “sustained ecumenical commitment in support of unity with justice.” In announcing the award, the Council describe him as “receiving with grace and diplomacy the affirmations and admonitions of other churches on behalf of his own; remaining committed to the ecumenical movement in times of discouragement and times of hope; and understanding the relationships between the quest for Christian unity and the need for human community.”

Whiten, who retired as Massachusetts Conference Minister and President last year, was honored at the council’s annual meeting, held on January 24th at Andover Newton Theological School.
