Amistad paintingAmistad Freedom Tour
On June 21, 2007 - just the day before Synod begins - the schooner Amistad will set sail from New Haven, CT, on the eighteen month "Atlantic Freedom Tour." Under the banner "Confronting the Past; Transforming the Present," the vessel will visit England to help commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in the former British Empire. It will then travel to West Africa and Sierra Leone, homeland of the Amistad captives of 1839. Churches, groups of churches and associations can be part of this historic event by sponsoring a day of the voyage.
