Cultivating Faith

“Now as you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in utmost eagerness, and in our love for you - so we want you to excel also in this generous undertaking.” - 2 Corinthians 8:7

Generosity is a fruit of the spirit and mark of discipleship; therefore, it is important to emphasize the giver’s need to give as a matter of growing in faith, rather than as a response to the financial needs of the church. Our giving to God’s work in the world through the church is a joyful, faithful and grateful response to the Original Giver.

People come from different backgrounds and are in varying places along their journey of faith, therefore a variety of approaches is necessary to meet them where they are and inspire them to lead lives of increasing generosity, including financial giving. The more invested people are in the faith community with their time and talents, the more invested they tend to be financially, and vice-versa.

Here are some ideas for inviting people to grow in generosity and faith.

Promote the theology of generosity in worship

Offer educational programs that include small group study and opportunities for personal reflection

Provide spiritual and practical guidance to help people to grow as givers

Encourage personal testimonies in print and worship to help people connect their story to God’s story
