Eliot Church of Newton, UCC has reduced its carbon pollution by 61% when comparing before and after years with similar numbers of heating degree days. Energy needed for heating is the major contributor of carbon pollution in the northeast and heating fuel use varies with heating degree days. Eliot capped off a multi-year campaign of energy efficiency projects with the installation of a solar rooftop system in 2016.The combined cost savings achieved by efficiency upgrades and the solar system are $17,803!
First Congregational Church of Stoneham, UCC reduced its carbon pollution by 66%! It also upgraded its heating, lighting and building envelope over several years, and installed solar PV in 2016. Total energy savings are projected to be $30,680. According to Rev. Meredith Allen, "We believe we are created in the image of God, and we honor God and our neighbor when we choose to protect the environment….By going solar and confronting the deadly threat of climate change, we hope to be a catalyst for our entire community."
Leading by example can be a powerful part of our moral responsibility to care for creation. By reducing the carbon footprints at our houses of worship we also lower energy bills and free up funds needed for other important purposes. Participants will learn what to do about:
- Electricity — How to recognize the major energy hogs — and what to do about them.
- Solar Power — Is solar an option for your congregation?
- Heat & Air Conditioning — Is it time for an upgrade?
- Building Envelope — How to make your congregation more comfortable & save money.
- Behavior — How simple actions can reduce your energy bill – and carbon footprint – by 10% or more.
