ADVENT RESOURCES
Often overlooked in our rush towards Christmas is the season of Advent. This four week long period affords us the chance to quietly reflect, patiently ponder and intentionally set apart time to await the birth of Christ. The ideas and resources contained on these pages will help to facilitate this process of waiting and building anticipation.
Updated 11/13/07
Creating a Sacred Space
In the Home to Celebrate Advent, Christmas and Epiphany
Resources to be used at home:
The seasons of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany are great times for creating, in the home, a “sacred space” or special spot that can become the focus for family based celebrations and prayer. This space can have as its focal point a table upon which seasonally appropriate items can be placed. Families might gather in this space daily or weekly to mark the days of the season or gather for prayer, reflection or activities.
Advent
Color: purple or blue - Place a purple or blue cloth on table.
The traditional color of Advent is purple, the royal color of the coming King. The color blue which suggests hope and represents the traditional color associated with Mary’s robe is also used during Advent.
Items to place in your sacred space:
1. Advent wreath - constructed with three purple or blue candles and one pink candle in a circle surrounding a white pillar Christ candle. One candle is lit each Sunday during Advent. Although traditions in churches may vary the meaning of the candles are often; week 1 - hope, week 2 - peace, week 3 - love (pink candle), week 4 - joy.
2. Advent Calendar – Like the Advent wreath, an Advent calendar is a visual means of helping the family in its devotional preparation for the Christmas celebration. As children complete one day at a time, they learn what it means to wait in preparation for the birth of Jesus.
Advent calendars can be purchased or made. Purchased calendars usually have a window to be opened each day with a picture or scripture behind it. Choosing one that unfolds the story of Christ’s birth rather than a secular theme of Christmas can be another way of reinforcing the meaning of Christmas.
3. Manger Scene, Crèche, Nativity Set -
Using the manger scene (crèche) to re-enact the story of Jesus' birth serves as a teaching tool and can establish a family tradition. By not setting the complete scene out as a decoration but using it to tell the story, you reinforce the meaning of the seasons of Advent, Christmas and Epiphany. Begin by setting the scene in a room where the family spends most of its time. Place the animals in the stable. Put Mary, Joseph and the donkey in some other part of the house, moving them during daily Advent worship closer to the stable. On Christmas Eve, place Mary, Joseph and the donkey in the stable, putting Baby Jesus in the manger after the children are asleep. On Christmas morning move the shepherds, sheep and angels to the crèche. Start the kings and camels on their journey from a remote part of the house and move them closer during the twelve days of Christmas, arriving at the stable on Epiphany.
4. Create a Jesse Tree - (Click here for purchase information)
One way to bring alive to children the hope of Advent and the words of ancient prophets is by creating a Jesse Tree. The tradition of the Jesse Tree comes from Isaiah 11:1-9, where God promises the Israelites that a peaceful kingdom will come again ("A shoot will spring forth from the stump of Jesse, and a branch out of his roots"). A branch or small tree provides the base and ornaments representing many of the generations of God's people throughout biblical history are created to be hung on the tree. If possible, enough ornaments are created so that one can be hung each day of Advent. Biblical texts can be assigned to go along with each ornament. A Jesse Tree is a powerful symbol to help tell the story of God and God's people, and to connect the Advent Season with the faithfulness of God and the hopefulness of God's people across history.
Christmas
Color: White - traditionally suggesting gladness, light, joy - Place a white cloth on your table.
Items to place in your sacred space and special Christmas day activities:
- The infant Jesus can be placed in the manger of the crèche.
- Read the Story of Christ’s birth from the Bible or a Bible Story Book.
- Read a good Children’s Christmas Story - list of suggested Children’s Books is available on the Massachusetts Conference web site. (Click here)
- Sing Christmas Carols
- Set aside a special gift which will not be opened on Christmas but rather on Epiphany, January 6.
Epiphany
Color: White/Green - Place a white or green cloth on your table.
The color for Epiphany the days following, through the week that begins with The Baptism of Jesus, is white, a continuation of the Christmas spirit and mood. From the Second Sunday after Epiphany until Transfiguration Sunday the liturgical color is green, the church’s neutral color. Green is frequently explained to be the color of living, growing plants, suggestive of spiritual growth.
Items to place in your sacred space:
- Family members could place special star ornaments in the sacred space.
- Add to the Nativity set (crèche) the Magi who followed the star.
- Some may celebrate Epiphany by holding a Three Kings Party. A special cake can be made which contains a small prize. The one who receives the prize in their piece of cake can be the king for the party.
-
The Massachusetts Conference Resource Center is made possible through Our Churches Wider Mission basic support and fellowship dues.
Retell the story of the Magi from the Bible (Matthew 2:1-12) or a Bible story book.
- Share the Italian legend of La Befana by reading Tomie DePoala’s story Old Befana.
Advent Books:
Christmas Day in the Morning by Pearl S. Buck
A man remembers a great discovery he made when he was 15 and living on his father's farm. A few days before Christmas he overhears his dad saying how much he hates having to wake his son at dawn for morning chores. As a special gift for his father, the boy gets up at a quarter to three on Christmas morning and does the milking by himself.
Christmas Tapestry by Patricia Polacco
When a bad leak ruins the sacristy wall in his father's church, Jonathan Jefferson Weeks thinks his family's first Christmas Eve service in Detroit will be ruined, too. But then he and his father find a beautiful tapestry for sale in a secondhand shop. Just the thing to cover the damaged wall and give the church a festive look! But then, amazingly, an old Jewish woman who is visiting the church recognizes the beautiful cloth. It is her discovery that leads to a real miracle on Christmas Eve. This timely tale of love and generosity between people of different religious faiths is a wonderful showcase for Polacco's art. It features snowy holiday scenes and a colorful tapestry that is almost a character in itself.
December by Eve Bunting
On Christmas Eve, a homeless boy and his mother share their small cardboard-box home with an elderly stranger. The next morning, she is gone. And outside, the child thinks but cannot believe he sees an angel like the one on his December calendar page. The story ends a year later, when his situation has changed. His mother has a job and they have moved to a small apartment. It is then he observes that his calendar angel wears a rose just like the one the stranger had put on his Christmas tree. The message of charity as a risk worth taking in a dangerous world is a sobering, thoughtful holiday message.
Probity Jones and the Fear Not Angel by Walter Wangerin
Ill with a fever and forced to stay home and miss her Christmas pageant performance, young Probity witnesses a Christmas miracle of her very own. Folded within the silken robes of the Fear Not Angel, Probity soon hovers high above her Christmas pageant and is also magically transported to the wondrous first Christmas.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson
The Herdmans are the worst kids in the history of the world. They lie, steal, smoke cigars, swear, and hit little kids. So no one is prepared when this outlaw family invades church one Sunday and decides to take over the annual Christmas pageant. None of the Herdmans has ever heard the Christmas story before. Their interpretation of the tale -- the Wise Men are a bunch of dirty spies and Herod needs a good beating -- has a lot of people up in arms. But it will make this year's pageant the most unusual anyone has seen and, just possibly, the best one ever.
The Christmas Menorah: How a Town Fought Hate by Janie Cohn
Based on a true incident that occurred in Billings, Montana, this story begins when a rock is thrown through a boy's bedroom window in which a menorah is displayed. The boy, Isaac, is frightened and unsure whether he wants to put the menorah back. His parents call the police, and his mother goes on television and to a meeting to talk about hate crimes in the community. Inspired by stories of the Danish people helping their Jewish neighbors during World War II, the people of Billings put menorahs in their windows to take a stand against bigotry. When a schoolmate supports Isaac, he takes his own stand by returning the menorah to its place.
The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey by Susan Wojciechowski
"Christmas is pish-posh," grumbles Jonathan Toomey, the best wood carver in the valley. He's a Scrooge like recluse; but he's a gentle grouch, it turns out, and he hides a sad secret. He's transformed, not by Dickensian ghosts, but by an eager seven-year-old boy and his widowed mother who ask him to make them a Christmas crèche.
The Legend of Poinsettia by Tomie De Paola
In this legend from Mexico, a little girl, Lucinda, is proud to help her mother weave a new blanket for the Baby Jesus to be used in a Christmas procession. But when Lucinda's mother takes ill, Lucinda tangles the yarn and is unable to complete the blanket. Feeling she has ruined Christmas, Lucinda is reluctant to go to the procession until a mysterious old woman appears from the shadows and tells Lucinda, "Any gift is beautiful because it is given. Whatever you give, the Baby Jesus will love because it comes from you." Nervously, Lucinda grabs an armful of weeds, which she brings into the church. As she prays, the weeds open into dazzling red flowers that decorate the altar.
The Legend of Old Befana by Tomie De Paola
Because Befana's household chores kept her from finding the Baby King, she searches to this day, leaving gifts for children on the Feast of the Three Kings.
The Nativity by Julie Vivas
The words of the New Testament story of Jesus’ birth are delivered with complete sobriety: Gabriel gives Mary the news that she will bear a child, she and Joseph go off to Bethlehem, shepherds and wealthy men pay homage to the child in the manger. But Gabriel wears unlaced, clumsy work boots and delivers his message over coffee or soup at Mary's kitchen table, and when there is no room at the inn, the rest of the town's visitors deck themselves out in a tree and snooze in stairwells. Vivas irreverently unravels the mystique of the famous birth, showing a bulgingly pregnant Mary and first glimpses of a child barely out of the womb. Also a part of this mad charm is an elegant mastery of form; wispy, glimmering watercolors show comic characters in the midst of grand events.
The Other Wise Man by Pamela Kennedy
Story of Artaban, the "fourth wise man", who sold all he possessed and bought three jewels to present to the Christ-child. He could not have predicted how his eventful journey would end.
The Quilt Makers Gift by Jeff Brumbeau
A charitable seamstress makes beautiful quilts that she gives to the needy and poor. When a greedy king hears of the marvelous creations, he demands that she sell him one. She refuses, but says that she will give him one if he gives away all of his possessions. The angry monarch tries to force her to bend to his will. Unsuccessful, he begins to travel the world giving away his amassed treasures. When he returns to the village, a happier man in ragged clothing, she presents him with a beautiful quilt.
Three Wise Women by Mary Hoffman
This variation of the Bible story describes how three women from different parts of the world travel to see the baby Jesus. Each of them is unsure why she feels compelled to follow the bright star, or even how she made the journey, but they all end up in a stable looking upon the sleeping infant. Each woman is moved to offer a gift-one gives a loaf of bread, one gives a story, and one gives a kiss from her young son whom she has carried with her. Readers are told that Jesus never forgot their gifts: he showed the world the joy of sharing fresh baked bread, he told wonderful stories, and he taught that the greatest gift is love.
Why Christmas Trees Aren't Perfect by Richard H. Schneider
Even though its kind sacrifices for the animals of the forest have marred the perfection of its shape, Small Pine is selected to be the Christmas tree in the Queen's castle, demonstrating that living for the sake of others makes us most beautiful in the eyes of God.
