Telling the Story

“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in Heaven.” Matthew 5:14-16

People are constantly asked to give money to support various worthy causes. Since they have so many choices about where to give, the church must make a compelling case for their support. As the church of Jesus Christ, we have a uniquely inspiring story to tell about the transforming power of God’s steadfast love, hope and generosity in our time and place. The local church exists to proclaim the gospel and address suffering and needs of all kinds, in the process, lives – including our own – are changed for the better. Now, more than ever, people need to hear the good news. Let your light shine!

Use every opportunity and medium available to you to tell stories about how the church is changing lives in order to help people connect their giving to their living as people of faith. How are you living out your God-given mission in the community and world? Show them through bulletin boards, newsletter articles, testimonies in worship (click here for ideas), narrative budgets and more that the church is not an institution or a building, but the living body of Christ.
