Graduating high school seniors were recently invited to the MACUCC’s first annual “Rite of Affirmation Ceremony.” The Ceremony incorporated an anointing, different prayer stations, Scripture, music and recognition of the youths’ next steps on their life journeys.
“This unique worship service was planned to acknowledge the transition from high school to young adulthood,” says Kris LoFrumento, Program Coordinator of Young Adult Ministries, “and the first Conference-wide attempt to keep the youth connected with the denomination.”
Approximately 260 invitations were sent to high-school seniors whose names had been submitted by local church pastors, Christian educators, and youth staff members. In addition, over 100 staff persons were invited to witness and share in the ceremony.
The Conference will collect information as to where the youth will attend college, enter the military or move to another church, city, or state. Then a postcard will be sent to the local pastors to make them aware that the youth will be in the area. The new pastor/church can then follow-up and welcome the youth.
At the ceremony, youth were given ideas to take with them on how to pray while on their life’s road, whether by lighting candles, journal writing, or singing a contemporary worship song. LoFrumento commented, “This is a unique way to worship, sing, and celebrate the life journey of our youth and help them rejoice in all that’s yet to come.”
