Women’s union has long history of giving grants

March 2001

The Massachusetts Women’s Home Missionary Union accepts grant applications from organizations that are running or developing programs designed to meet the material and spiritual needs of people, particularly women and children.

The group was founded in 1881, and through fundraisers, bequests and gifts from Woman’s Cent Societies — forerunners of today’s women’s fellowships — the union established an endowment fund. Today, the group distributes between $75,000 and $100,000 in grants each year.

The grants support a wide variety of programs, including low-cost day care, mentoring programs for women in crisis, programs that support women’s and children’s health, and leadership programs for children and youth.

Grant applications are reviewed quarterly at the Board of Directors meetings. For information on submitting a grant application, contact Ellie Kell.
