Taylor co-leads interfaith serviceMarch, 2003 Conference Minister and President Nancy S. Taylor was one of a diverse group of religious leaders who led 1,300 people in an interfaith witness for peace at the famous Trinity Church in Copley Square in Boston in January. Taylor joined other Christian leaders, as well as representatives of Sikh, Islamic, Hindu, Buddhist and Jewish communities in the service, held at the same time as President George W. Bush’s State of the Union address. The service included Buddhists marching and banging a drum, a time of silence led by a Quaker, and a jazz band playing a Christian spiritual. Prayers for peace were spoken in Arabic, English, Gurmukhi, Hebrew, Hindi and Japanese. The religious leaders who came together for the service all agreed on a statement which said, in part: “We stand in solidarity with a multitude of religious voices who seek peace here and now, and that have spoken out in alarm and concern at this advance toward war.” Return to United Church News front pageReturn to Massachusetts Conference home page |
