Ann Plumley, Associate for Church and Ministry Concerns, has annnounced the continuation of the “Massachusetts Conference Reads…” program with its newest book selection, Babette’s Feast.
Building on the success of the inaugural feature,
Marcus Borg ’s The Heart of Christianity, Plumley invites
churches throughout the Massachusetts Conference to read
or view and discuss Babette’s Feast – a short story by Isak
Dinesen that was made into an award-winning film in 1986– and then join with others around the Conference preparing
for Advent with conversations about the Christian practices
of hospitality and reconciliation.
“This selection was made because it provides great
flexibility in programming options – small groups, familydiscussions or whole-community feasts,’ says Plumley.“While the themes of hospitality and reconciliation are
important at all times, they are especially relevant in our
churches today and can be used to prompt an examination
or ‘recovery’of Advent practices.”
Plumley hopes the program will assist in prompting
thought-provoking, community-building, respectful and
faith-building discussions. Resources and guides are available
at http://www.macucc.org/macuccreads/.
This Conference-wide initiative is sponsored by the
MACUCC Ministry Team, composed of members of the
executive staff, program staff and the
Pastoral Excellence Team.
