Youth @ Synod Offers Teens More

Debbie Gline Allen

For the second General Synod in a row, an opportunity is being offered for UCC teens to become immersed in the work of the United Church of Christ as it comes together every two years — engaging with delegates and visitors from all over the country, worshipping together, listening to keynote speakers, joining in mission work, and discussing and debating issues that concern who we are as a people of God.

Youth @ Synod will be held June 21—25, 2019 (with June 26th serving as a return travel day) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and is for young leaders ages 13 to 18. The cost is $900 per teen (the MA Conference will cover expenses for 2 adult chaperones). Scholarships are available through the MA Conference.

Teens attending Youth @ Synod are provided an opportunity to nurture their advocacy skills around justice issues, increase their leadership skills, and learn about the resolution process. They will be provided a list of the resolutions from which to choose one to study and present with the opportunity to share their views on the discussion floor.

Clearly, this is a different kind of experience than a Regional or National Youth Event that the United Church of Christ offers during alternate summers. This event brings together teens who are interested in the inner workings of the United Church of Christ, in its mission of extravagant welcome and justice in our hurting world, and who would like to learn more about the ways in which the UCC functions nationally in relation to the rest of the UCC.

Of course there couldn’t be a youth aspect to General Synod without pizza! Some of the other activities offered to the teens will be:

  • Meet and eat (Pizza Dinner) with Rev. Traci Blackmon
  • Engage with local art and artists
  • Let’s Move – Multicultural Dance party
  • Visit the Black Holocaust Museum in Milwaukee
  • Serve with Pathfinders, an agency that empowers youth confronting homelessness and crisis
  • Listen to national faith leaders speak on issues of peace and justice
  • Network with other UCC youth and international guests
If your congregation has a teen, or even a small group of teens, who show leadership potential and are interested in learning more about how the United Church of Christ works, click here for more information and how to register. Space is limited, and the registration deadline is February 15, 2019.

I look forward to working with your teens in Milwaukee this summer!
