Interim Organist/Choir Director

The Congregational Church of Harvard is seeking a vibrant, dynamic leader of music ministry for our established music program and choir.  This position is an interim position with the option of becoming permanent, based on mutual fit. The ideal candidate is highly skilled in both organ and piano, accomplished in conducting church choirs, and has a substantial knowledge of church hymns as well as classical and sacred music. We anticipate the position requires 5 to 8 hours a week, including on site time and preparation time.


Job summary

The organist/choir director will provide music for all church worship services; oversee the care, maintenance, and tuning of all musical instruments; purchase music supplies as necessary with approval of the music committee.  


Work schedule

The organist/choir director will provide organ and/or piano music and direct the senior choir at all regularly scheduled Sunday morning services, except as outlined in the employment agreement, plus additional services during the year: Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday evening, and Christmas Eve services (often held at 5:00PM and 10:00PM)

In addition the organist/choir director will be responsible for the following:

  1. Senior choir rehearsal once weekly from 7:30-9:00PM on Thursday evening and Sunday mornings prior to the worship service.  Rehearse with soloists and instrumentalists at agreed-upon times.

  2. Attendance at music committee meetings, and regular meetings with the Pastor and music committee chair as agreed upon.

  3. Rehearsal with children’s choirs after church on Sunday or at other times as agreed upon.

  4. Coordinate obtaining publishers’ permission for use of copyrighted materials

  5. Supervise the care, tuning and maintenance or the organ and piano with the assistance of the music committee.  The music committee will approve all expenditures in advance,

Additional options

  1. The organist/choir director has the right of first refusal in regard to providing organ or piano music at all weddings, memorial service, and funerals held within the church.

  2. The church shall permit the use of church instruments for giving limited lessons by the organist/choir director.  The timing of such lessons must be coordinated with the church administrator.
