Pilgrim Church Director of Educational Ministries Job Description

Pilgrim Congregational Church UCC Lexington, MA is a small/mid-sized congregation centered on loving God and loving others.  We are seeking a dynamic Director of Educational Ministries who is enthusiastic about working with people of all ages to continue growing our already thriving programs.  We envision this position as a year round position serving 20 hours per week on average.  

Pilgrim Church values new ideas, diversity, and passion. The educational ministries of Pilgrim Church ensure that the church is a safe and caring intergenerational community where people of all ages both empower and remain present to one another. The Director of Educational Ministries works with the Educational Ministries Team on the development and promotion of the educational program of the church and reports to the Pastor.

DUTIES INCLUDE, BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Attend the Church Council meetings and the Educational Ministries Team to set goals, determine priorities, establish programs, and coordinate a calendar of events

  • Overseeing that all areas of Children’s Ministry are implemented, including: curriculum, prayer, programs, and music.  Responsible for ensuring volunteer coverage and that attendance is recorded in classrooms for all children and youth on Sunday mornings.

  • Delivering the Children’s Message in coordination with the Pastor during the worship service.

  • Supporting the church’s annual intergenerational Christmas Pageant.

  • Overseeing that all areas of the Youth program are implemented, including:  programming for the Junior Youth on Sunday mornings for educational experiences, coordinating once monthly fellowship activities for the Junior Youth, creating means of continued involvement for our Senior Youth, exploring and implementing mission opportunities for and with the youth, and fostering spiritual growth.

  • Taking primary responsibility for the administration of the Confirmation curriculum and co-leading the sessions with the Pastor

  • Providing leadership to the educational ministry of the church, including identifying gifts of lay leaders and promoting their involvement in Children’s Church and Youth Programs.

  • On an ad hoc basis, leading or organizing adult education programs.

  • Overseeing the professional nursery care provider on Sunday mornings and ensure that childcare will be provided during adult programs or congregational meetings.

  • Meeting with the Pastor, attending staff meetings, and being present at the meetings of any committee wherein the educational ministries of the church may be discussed.

  • Keeping current of the latest research, methods, and materials as related to religious education and youth ministry. 

  • Complying with all established church policies and procedures as well as all applicable federal and state laws including distribution and collection of CORI forms for the CORI administrator.

  • Communicating with the Director of Pilgrim Nursery School and committees as needed.

  • Assist with the maintenance of the church Facebook page, contribute to e-notes, as well as Pilgrim’s Progress to enhance communication in and out of the church community.

THE POSITION OF DIRECTOR OF EDUCATIONAL MINISTRIES:

  • Requires a bachelors degree or UCC Christian Educator’s Certificate

  • Requires the ability to listen effectively and to communicate clearly, both orally and in written form

  • Requires the ability to speak, read, and write English

  • Requires basic abilities to use computer software

  • Requires passing a CORI background check

THE PERSON HOLDING THE POSITION OF DIRECTOR OF EDUCATIONAL MINISTRIES WILL: 

  • Be committed to Christian principles and teachings

  • Be a non-anxious, compassionate presence in the midst of conflicting points of view and challenging conversations. 

  • Be able to provide leadership around working toward consensus and building up skills in the laity

  • Demonstrate strong speaking skills and the ability to speak confidently before groups of all ages

  • Demonstrate quality leadership skills

  • Demonstrate exceptional administrative skills
