7:00 – 8:00 PM Eastern
Leader: W. Lee Dickson
Godly Play is a creative, imaginative approach to Christian formation. Rooted in story and Montessori principles this ministry practice nourishes spiritual and moral development in children of all ages. Many have heard of Godly Play and yet may not know what it is, how to learn more, or how to start. The focus of this webinar is to provide both a theological and practical overview, hopefully inspiring the listener to want to learn more. We will begin with a summary of Godly Play: our story based philosophy, our beliefs about childhood spirituality, and our method. We will then explore the practicalities of a Godly Play program: training, materials, environment and support. We will leave time for questions and provide references enabling the listener to continue on their Godly Play journey. The intended audience for this webinar are those seeking an effective spiritual formation program for their children who are new to or curious about Godly Play. Godly Play is best understood by experiencing it. If your schedule allows, please visit our YouTube channel prior to our time together to view it in action.
W. Lee Dickson is the Executive Director of the Godly Play® Foundation, a Godly Play Trainer and Mentor. The Godly Play Foundation supports the ever-widening Circle of Godly Play by nurturing the spiritual and moral development of children; equipping adult mentors to walk alongside them; advancing the study of children’s spirituality; creating excellent materials to promote exploration; expanding the reach of Godly Play into new constituencies; and sharing the great story of God in creation. Lee began her Godly Play journey 20 years ago when she and her husband were ‘church shopping’ for a Christian education program for their son. They found St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Cohasset, Massachusetts where Godly Play had just begun the year before. It instantly intrigued their active child. It also drew Lee in and her own faith journey has been delightfully enriched with story and wonder. Her current ministry is with older children as she tells stories with 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders and support her church’s middle school Godly Play program. In 2008 Lee joined the Board of Directors of the Godly Play Foundation, serving as Treasurer and President. She became a Godly Play Trainer in 2012 and joined as Executive Director in early 2016. Lee brings her organizational skills to good use in her management and oversight of the divisions of the Foundation including U.S. Training, Godly Play Resources, The Center for the Theology of Childhood and International Development.
