The Rev. H. Alfred Allenby

11/11/2018

The Rev. H. Alfred Allenby died from complications related to pneumonia on November 11, 2018 in Falmouth at the age of 92.  He is survived by his three children, Deborah (and Mark) Albert of Falmouth, MA, Stuart (and Cyndi) Allenby of Turners Falls, MA, and Peter (and Saramaria) Allenby, of Falmouth. MA.  Alfred is preceded by his wife of 51 years, Frances Ludlow Munson Allenby.

Al attended Phillips Andover Academy and Yale University, receiving his Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Divinity degrees from Yale University.  Al married Frances Ludlow Munson, in 1955.  He worked as the assistant pastor at the First Congregational Church in Denver, CO.  The family moved east where Al became the pastor at the Second Congregational Church in Braintree, MA.  In 1963, Al then returned to his boarding school roots joining the Mount Hermon School for Boys, in Gill, MA. There he served in several roles over the course of fifteen years, notably teaching religious studies before entering the college counseling department. He was also an assistant wrestling coach and football coach.  In 1978 Al began work at the King School in Stamford, CT, where for ten years he was a college counselor and served in administrative capacities before retiring and moving into the home his parents built in Falmouth, MA, where he lived until his recent death.

Al had an enormous zest for life. He was a passionate gardener, avid sailor, and loved taking early morning walks along Surf Drive and on the Shining Sea bike path in Falmouth to and from Woods Hole. His love of gardening produced prodigious quantities of vegetables and flowers at both homes in Mount Hermon and in Falmouth (the seed and bulb companies mourn his loss!). His love of music was evident as he sang for many years in the Falmouth Mostly All Men’s Chorus.

Al’s love of church and his faith were central to defining his life and mission in the world. He was very active in the life of the First Congregational Church of Falmouth and its community.  He last attended a Sunday service several weeks ago, and upon entering the church, he turned to his escorts and exclaimed, “I’m home!”  Indeed, he was and is at home.

A service of interment for family and close friends took place at Oak Grove Cemetery on December 8, 2018.  The larger community is invited to a memorial service celebrating the life of H. Alfred Allenby on May 18, 2019 - 2:00 PM at the First Congregational Church in Falmouth, MA.
