The Rev. Paul Victor Varga, former pastor of the Belchertown United Church of Christ, died on May 15, 2017.
The Rev. Varga was active in the wider church, having served as as Moderator of both the Hampshire Association and Metropolitan Boston Association, attending general Synods of the UCC in Omaha, Boston, and St. Louis as a delegate, and training 400 volunteers for the 1991 General Synod in Norfolk, VA.
In retirement, he was a member of South Congregational Church, UCC, Concord, NH. He was married to Joanne Merrill Varga in Falmouth, ME, 62 years ago on September 4, 1954.
Mr. Varga was born at the family home in Prince George, Virginia, delivered by his father. He graduated from Disputanta High School (VA) in 1946, from Elon University (NC) in 1951 and from Hartford Theological Seminary (CT) in 1954. During summers between seminary years, he served a church in Hope, North Dakota.
After ordination at Bethlehem Congregational Church in Prince George, VA, he served churches in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Virginia before retiring and becoming a resident member of the Community of Jesus in Orleans, MA, after many years as an Oblate member.
He served as President of Pioneer Valley Council for Weekday Religious Education (MA) and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Boston Christian Missionary Society.
After moving to Falmouth, ME in 2004, Paul served as a volunteer at Maine Medical Center for 10 years and at the Preble Street Soup Kitchen in Portland, ME for 6 years. He was active in the Falmouth Congregational Church and co-led a monthly Bible study at Ocean View. In August 2014, he moved to Havenwood/Heritage Heights retirement community in Concord, NH.
Paul enjoyed following the Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics, reading, gardening and travel through the United States and many foreign countries.
He was predeceased by his parents, George and Susan Varga two sisters, Helen Varga and Irene Meyer and four brothers, John, Willie, George and Edwin Vargo. In addition to his wife, Joanne, Paul is survived by three children, Paula Vaughn and her husband, John, of Auburn, NH; Jan Belanger and her husband, David, of Rutland, MA; and Alan Varga and his wife, Brenda, of Henniker, NH, as well as his twin sister, Pauline Bresko of W. Columbia, SC, 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service was held at Falmouth Congregational Church - UCC, 267 Falmouth Road, Falmouth, Maine on May 27 at 10 AM.
